Oh my goodness, Trey. I relished this read. The history. The reversal of phrase to reveal the bias of white as the default. The summary of PSA as *a* hermeneutic rather than *the* hermeneutic (fairly, I might add). The spicy captions. This was delicious.
"We just assume they’re the default. That how they’ve done it is how it’s always been done. Everyone else is somehow making stuff up, except for them." 👏👏
My first Substack post was on the influence of Dr. Cone on my faith. For me, you can't read him and ever go back to "white liberation theology."
I am so grateful Natalia Marandiuc made us read James Cone in systematics at Perkins. It so convicted me I wanted to throw it across the room--it totally changed my faith.
I just got my hard copy of Theologizin’ Bigger and I can’t wait to start reading. Trey, you are really a visionary, and I so appreciate your voice in this world.
“The Church was selling salvation. They weren’t leading people to repentance & transformation. They would sell you a ticket to heaven. He ain’t think that was right. They called him a heretic for that.”
It is frustrating to see this careless misrepresentation of the Catholic teaching. A quick glance at Catholic Answers would reveal that indulgences can’t save you. They are *only efficacious for the already saved.* Always have been. Additionally, the conflict between Luther and Rome was more complex. Luther was excommunicated when he publicly burned the papal bull ordering him to recant, and then *publicly burned all of canon law.* There was misunderstanding and fault on both sides, but these are hardly the actions of a reluctant man.
Please, I beg of you, just read Catholic Answers briefly:
